This was the second year of the Waterford Rotary Club Ronald McDonald Cycle in aid of Ronald Mc Donald House, Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, Dublin.
The cycle from McDonald’s on the Cork road to Tramore and back (10k) attracted about 63 cyclists from 8 years to 75 years of age. It was started by the Mayor of Waterford, John Halligan, supported by the WLR outside broadcasting unit at the start line , and supporters along the route. Surgeons from Crumlin Hospital and parents who had stayed in the Ronald McDonald House also joined in the fun.
In total €9,873 was raised in 2010 and over €7,000 in 2009. A special mention for one cyclist, John O’Regan, who raised €2,130!
Mc Donald’s restaurant along with other local businesses (Caulfields Super Valu and Altitude sports) kindly assisted with all aspects. Refreshing drinks were provided in Tramore with hamburgers and fruit at the finish line back in Waterford. With the help of a sunny day the event was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and promises to become an annual event for Waterford Rotary club. This event has become a success due to the partnership and joint effort of McDonald’s Waterford, with owner Joe Byrne, and RMHC Ireland, with Marian Carroll CEO, and Waterford Rotary Club. Each component was critical and Waterford Rotary are already planning the 2011 cycle. Waterford Rotary Club identified this as a great opportunity to combine health, fun and charity in support of a great cause that few people are untouched by in some way – supporting those with sick children at a time when they need it most.
